How to Paint with a Compressed Air Sprayer

An air compressor can be used to paint. This will save you time and money. It also eliminates the pollution caused by aerosol propellants. These are the steps to follow when you want to repaint using a compressed air sprayer.

1.Initial Actions

Choose the paint you want to use and how thin it should be. Acrylics and latex paints, as well as oil-based enamels, can be used with a compressor sprayer. The ideal thinner will permit more viscous paint flow openly with siphon tube, fluorometer, and nozzle.
Prepare the area you are going to paint. Place a sheet of plastic, scrap lumber, ground cloth or other material on the floor, flooring, or furniture. You will need to protect the surrounding areas and ensure that you have adequate airflow for "fixed" projects like this one.
Protect adjacent surfaces from "overspray", using masking, painter’s tape, and painter’s paper. In windy outdoor conditions, paint fragments can travel farther than you think.
Place your paint and thinner on a flat surface so spillages don't damage anything.
Wear a respirator or mask, shatterproof glasses, and gloves. These will protect you from harmful fumes, particulates and keep you clean. Preparing the surface for painting. Wash the surface with mineral spirits for oil-based paints; soap and water for acrylic or latex paints.
Prime the surface if necessary. You can use a brush or roller to paint it, or you can use a sprayer to apply primer. Follow the steps below. If necessary, smoothen it after you are done.
2. 2.Prep the Compressor
Turn on your air compressor. The compressor will need to be able to pump air. A regulator is required for your compressor to allow you to adjust the pressure of the sprayer to the right setting. Otherwise, you will experience variations in spray pressure as stress changes.
The regulator authority should be changed to 12 or 25 PSI (pounds/square inch). You will need to adjust the amount depending on the sprayer. For more information, refer to the handbook or the tools.
Connect the sprayer to the airline combining. Make sure it is secure. You may need to seal the threads using Teflon tape. If your sprayer or hose pipe is equipped with quick-connect combinators, this tape will not be used.
In the paint mug, add a small amount of paint thinner. This is the reservoir that is attached to your spray gun's lowest setting. Use only enough to submerge siphon tube.
You can open the metering shutoff slightly. This is usually the lower of two screws above the handle (handgun grip), of the sprayer.
After a while, you should see a stream of paint thinner. If the paint thinner does not come out of the sprayer, it is possible to disassemble it to check for any blockages or leakages in the siphon tube setup.
You must empty the spray cup and dispose of any remaining thinners. You can also return the container to its original container by removing channel aids. Both mineral spirits and turpentine (two common thinners) can be flammable solvents. They should only be kept in their original containers.
3. Paint.
It is a good idea to strain the paint with a filter if it has been stored for a long time. This will remove any lumps of paint that may have formed. These swellings can block the siphon tube and metering valve and cause the paint to stop flowing.
Use an ideal thinner to thin the paint. The exact proportion of paint that you need to thin will depend on the type of sprayer, paint and nozzle. However, it is recommended that the paint be thinned by 15 to 20% to ensure good circulation. You will be able to see how thin your paint appears when you spray aerosol paint. This will give you an idea of what you want.
The paint mug should be filled to about 1/3 of its capacity. Secure it onto the sprayer. Attach the spray mug to the sprayer at the lowest point with hooks or screws.
The sprayer should be held approximately 5--10 inches (12.7--25.4 cm) from the surface. Move the sprayer in a side-to-side motion or up and down sweeping motions along the surface. To get a feel of the balance and weight, if you've never used this type of paint applicator before, hold it and swing it for a while.
To spray paint, press the trigger. To avoid drips and runs from over-application, keep the sprayer in motion.
Before you begin the main work, it is a good idea to test-paint a scrap piece of cardboard or timber. You can adjust the nozzle to achieve a finer spray pattern.
Each pass should be slightly overlapped. By doing this, the edges of your spray pattern won't leave any gaps in your paint job. Be aware of drips and runs, and spray fast enough to prevent the paint from getting too thick.
Keep the paint cup clean until you are finished with the project. You should not leave the paint container in the sprayer unattended.
Allow the paint to dry completely before re-coating if desired. A lot of paints require a good, but also "wet", coat. However, a second coat may be necessary to give the paint a more durable finish. For varnishes and polyurethane coatings, sanding between coats is recommended to improve the bond between them.
4. Make sure to clean up.
Empty out any paint that is not being used. You can throw away any paint that is still in good condition.
Paints that contain an epoxy paint, as well as paints with a stimulant (two part paints), cannot be returned to their original containers. They must be used completely or disposed of appropriately after being mixed.
Use thinner to clean the siphon tube. Get rid of any paint.
Spray the sprayer with about 1/4 of the paint thinner. You might have to repeat this step several times if there is too much paint in the cup, or the spray setting up is not perfect.
Remove all paper and masking tape from the work area. This should be done as soon as the paint job is dry. If you leave the tape outside for a prolonged period, it will allow the sticky to set up and make it difficult to remove.

For oil-based paints use mineral spirits. For latex and acrylic paints use soap and water. Put a little bit of paint thinner into the paint mug. It is a good idea to use a paint filter to remove any solidified paint that might have formed if the paint has been kept for an extended period of time. The paint type, sprayer, and paint type will determine the proportion of paint that you need to thin. However, it is recommended that you thin the paint by 15 to 20% to ensure a good circulation. This will give you an idea of the paint's thickness when using aerosol spray paint.
